Shoes, clothes, chemists and in fact a good selection of all types of shops, including small supermarkets are to be found in Velez Rubio and Velez Blanco.
There are four good weekly local markets: at nearby Velez Blanco; Velez Rubio, Maria and Puerto Lumberas. Experience the vibrancy of these bustling venues reflected in the splendid cornucopia of fruit, vegetable, cheese, olive and nut stalls, all piled with virtually all local produce as well as clothes, shoes and jewellery. Maria is famous for its many jamonerias which produce the delicious Iberian Jamon Serrano.
Cafes and Restaurants
Cafes and restaurants are inexpensive and good value - offering short but comprehensive menus of local and national dishes of excellent food and tapas, well cooked ample portions in spotless surroundings.

Less than 15 minutes drive away is Velez Rubio and Velez Blanco. Examples of Churches, Castles, Museums, town houses, aristocratic palaces ranging from Roman, through Moorish to 18 and 19 Century Spanish - all worth a visit to admire and absorb.
Nearest beaches -
- Aguilas, a typical Spanish fishing village and nearby sandy beaches.
- Garrucha has a lovely marina and beach, sand/shingle.
- Mojacar with is vibrancy and tourist shops, restaurants and bars are all within an hour’s drive.
Walks and Climbs
Numerous routes and pathways from which to choose, all of great beauty and all passable either on foot or by bicycle. Spectacular sights are guaranteed as is the sighting of unusual animals and impressivebirds of prey.
Virtually adjacent is the outstandingly beautiful Natural Park of Sierra María Los Velez. The National Park has ample parking, café, open air BBQ picnic area – well worth a visit. Ermita de la Virgen de la Cabeza and the Umbría de la Virgen Botanical gardens are within walking distance of María.
The lake and hot springs at Baza are approximately 1.5 hours away and Granada and the Alhambra Palace are within 2 hours reach. This incredible area also has one of the most important archaeological sites in the Iberian Peninsula, the Cave of Los Letreros – with its numerous cave paintings which date from more than 18,000 years ago.
